There but not There
by Marge Brown - 12:07 on 15 March 2018
Last month I read an article in a national newspaper about a fund-raising scheme, ‘Tommies’, to commemorate the end of WW1. In several locations around Britain 6-foot-high sculptures of ‘Tommy’ were installed; the sculptures take the form of a simple outline of a WW1 soldier and are made from aluminium (see picture below). Please view the website www.therebutnotthere.org.uk where you will find all the information about the scheme.
Inspired by the website I wrote to David Blincow and Graham Penfold as leaders of the Parish Council and the PCC to ask if they and their fellow committee members would consider the Parish Council and the PCC jointly purchasing a ‘Tommy’ for Caston Village.
The price for a Tommy sculpture is £750 (£375 for each organisation) which roughly equates to £41.67 for each Caston man who paid the ultimate price for doing his duty in fighting for our country. I believe it would be a fitting tribute and a gesture of appreciation to those men of Caston that we have our very own ‘Caston Tommy’.
Therefore, if you feel, as I do, this would be something the village should have then I urge you to lobby your Parish Councillors and your PCC to give serious consideration to this at their next meeting and hopefully agree to the request.
Kind regards – Marge Brown
