10 August 2016Holy Cross Church, Caston wins Heritage Lottery Fund support
Holy Cross Church in Caston, Norfolk has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the re-thatching and growing of the church, it was announced today. The project aims are to provide a new thatched roof to replace the existing one, which has come to the end of its life, make other improvements and involve the whole community more in the heritage of the church.
Development funding of £29,500 has been awarded to help Caston Parochial Church Council (PCC) progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date. Part of this initial grant will be used to perform various surveys and inspections to assess the full extent of the works needed and help plan them.
Holy Cross Church is a Grade 1 listed building situated within a conservation area, on the edge of the village green and is built of flint with stone quoins and dressings. The earliest mention of a Church in Caston is in a document of 1218, but it is likely that there was one on this site earlier.
Graham Penfold, a Churchwarden of the Parochial Church Council (PCC) said: “We are delighted to learn that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this support. The Church is one of the main focuses within the village and as stewards; we are keen to leave the fabric in the best possible state for future generations to enjoy. Hopefully it should also allow us to improve the existing facilities within the Church.”
Explaining the importance of the HLF support, Robyn Llewellyn, Head of HLF (East of England) said, “The heritage centre provides a great insight into the varied heritage of the local area. Its fascinating collections will now be available for more people to learn about. HLF is pleased to support this worthwhile project.”
