WI Cator Cup
Cator Cup 2009
Our theme this year was White Wedding. The event took place on Saturday 3rd and 4th April at the Norfolk and Norwich Showground.
Denise and Sue set up the stand on Friday and judging took place in the evening.
Unfortunately we didn’t win. We got 103 marks out of a possible 140 and we thought that the stand looked lovely.
Here are the pictures of our stand and of the three winners.
Caston entry – White Wedding
1st – Coltishall and Horstead with Woodland Winter Walks.
2nd – Old Buckenham with Wild Wild Women
3rd – Old Catton with Witchcraft
Cator Cup 2008
Well we didn’t win – but a great deal of time and effort went into the competition. The overall theme was Myths and Legends and Caston chose to do Santa Claus.
Five items had to be made and staged with a suitable backdrop.
We chose to make a floral exhibit, a lace item, a patchwork item, a greeting card and some scones.
Forty institutes from Norfolk took part. The winner was Cringleford; 2nd was Old Catton; and joint 3rd was Old Buckenham and South Wooton.
Every item was scored out of 20 points including staging and display.
We got top marks for two of our items. Our overall score was 117 points out of 140.
There were some beautiful displays this year and although we didn’t win – our stand still looked very good and some very positive comments were made.
As the old adage says – it is not the winning that matters it is the taking part. So much hard work went in to our display it is disappointing but hey – we can always do better next year.
Here are some pictures of our display and the winners.

Cator Cup Results 2007
Okay, so we didn’t win but we did get our best result ever. There were 41 branches of the WI throughout Norfolk that took part and Caston took a very creditable 10th place thanks to the efforts of Sue Ash, Denise Bearne, Elsa Bellingham, Annie Brooker, Pam Corne, Jenny Gardener, Chris Morrell and Val Shingfield.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Cator Cup, this is a competition where branches of the WI are invited to submit an entry that has to comply with strict rules and regulations, far too many to list here, but the entry itself comprises of a number of items that must follow a regionally chosen theme. The theme this year was a song. The song chosen by Caston was “Somewhere over the Rainbow” and accordingly a number of items were submitted. Teams are allowed to choose any five from eight items. Chosen were five cheese straws, fresh flowers, a hand embroidered pincushion, a jar of marmalade and a fabric-covered box.
Each of the five items scored marks out of 20 and additional marks were given for staging and for interpretation making a maximum 140 marks overall. Caston scored 126 achieving maximum marks for the flowers and marmalade.
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words so here they are along with the winning entries for comparison:-
