 WI Meetings 2010

WI – JULY 2010

Tonight saw us having a visit to the Alpaca Barns in nearby Cranworth. It was a lovely evening perfect for the tour.

Not the easiest place to find – but we got there eventually!

I don’t think that any of us knew much about the Alpaca but that was soon put right by our tour guides. The Alpaca is a lovely gentle animal and it was even more interesting as several of them had recently had babies – who were beautiful. The gestation period of the Alpaca being 11 months.

A very interesting fact is that they always know when it is going to rain because 10 minutes before it comes they run inside as they hate getting damp as they have no lanolin in their coats and they get drenched and cold.

A particularly sad story was that one was born with meningitis and went blind so has to be led round the field by the staff. But happily she has now produced a beautiful baby and the baby steers her around.

The Alpaca barn has a shop which unfortunately was being refurbished on our visit – but is now open.

We also learnt how they grade the wool which they shear from the animals every year and a lot of the goods are handmade by the owner into beautiful garments.

After the tour we had tea and coffee and our first meeting surrounded by the Alpacas!!!

Birthdays this month were Margaret and Annie – posies made by Lynn.

Next Month is our summer social – hosted by Elsa.

WI – June Meeting

A good turn out tonight and Denise gave us a report on the meeting in Cardiff including how the WI is growing in numbers – a good sign.

Tonight our speaker was Eileen Gomme on the subject of sugar craft Flowers. She made some stunning flowers including daffodils and carnations and told us where we could purchase the paste and other
tools. A truly fascinating and beautiful craft which had us all spellbound and wondering whether we could achieve such perfection. I think a lot of patience is needed.

Birthdays this month were Gill, Sue, June and Patsy – posies made by Pam Frogbrook.

Trips were discussed and our next outing is on 8th July to the Alpaca Barns – should be interesting. Swishing party announced on 5th August at Caston Village Hall – should be fun – this is a fundraising event – like a swapping party – bring something wearable and newish and take home something in return.

1st - Lois with a stunning red lily

No meeting next month – as a trip is arranged

WI – May 2010

Our darts and ten pin bowling teams have unfortunately lost in the finals – well there is always next year. We all had a lovely night out at our birthday dinner in April .

This meeting we were given a presentation by Sue Ovenden on the resolution to be put to the AGM in Cardiff in June.
This being that “the WI urges HM Government to introduce clear and mandatory country of origin labelling on all meat, poultry and fish products sold in this country”. We all voted unanimously to take this resolution forward.

Birthday posies this month for Ann and Pam Corne made by Sue.
